Living Like a Local – Hue’s Rise in Community-Based Tourism

As travelers increasingly seek authentic, immersive experiences, community-based tourism (CBT) is gaining momentum in Hue – not just as a trend, but as a promising pathway for sustainable local development.

Across highland villages and coastal communes, Hue is reintroducing itself not only as the land of imperial heritage, but also as a place where visitors can live like a local, discover traditions, and connect deeply with cultural roots.

A Luoi: Where Mountains Meet Culture

One shining example is A Luoi District, home to diverse ethnic groups and unspoiled nature. With more than 30 accommodations, six community tourism villages, and destinations like Pâr Le and A Nor waterfalls, A Luoi invites guests to stay in homestays, join local festivals, taste traditional dishes, and learn indigenous crafts. The emphasis is on sharing—not showcasing—culture.

Huong Thuy: Celebrating Rural Life

Meanwhile, in Huong Thuy Town, CBT shines through the Countryside Market Festival in Thuy Thanh Commune. This event recreates vibrant rural scenes with traditional games, foods, and performances—drawing tens of thousands of visitors. Local artisans and farmers play a central role, proving that tourism can thrive by honoring everyday life.

Challenges Behind the Charm

Despite its promise, CBT in Hue faces hurdles. Many programs are still seasonal or spontaneous, with local hosts lacking training in customer service, marketing, and product development. The tourist experience often depends on individual effort, rather than a consistent, professional standard.

Building the Future of CBT in Hue

To fully unlock CBT’s potential, authorities are focusing on training locals, building infrastructure, and encouraging partnerships between households, businesses, and investors. The goal is clear: high-quality, year-round tourism that benefits communities and preserves heritage.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has already approved a national CBT development strategy, and Hue is poised to become one of Vietnam’s leading models. With its rich tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and traditions, Hue’s true treasures lie in its people—and the stories they are ready to share.
